Fashion is a Social Media by Itself

The clothes we wear are a platform for social interaction. I use my own clothes to speak volumes about my personality, from the music I like to my sense of humor. And now, with the use of the Internet, I can use social media sites to make my fashion voice heard all over the world.

Many industries have taken advantage of these sites to create more “buzz” for their products, but the fashion industry has been slow to adopt this. Katie Hillier writes about this problem in her article The Six Social Sites Every Fashion Marketer Should Know. Hillier’s correct in stating that fashion labels and designers need more social media marketing, but I think the sites Hillier lists have a lot less visible growth than:

Superfuture redesigns the official tourist map of every major city to include major and minor fashion destinations, and viewers of the site can add in their own destinations they have found along with a review of the boutique or shop.

Streetpeeper has photos from almost every major city in the world of what people are wearing in everyday life, but they also do their best to list what products each person is wearing in the photo.

Lookbook allows members to upload styled photos of themselves for the collective fashion consciousness to give “hype” to. This site also gives an option to search images based on brand.

More social media marketing on sites like the ones I list above could greatly benefit the fashion industry, their customers, and the websites themselves.
