Virtual Fitting Room: Social media can get you instant feedback on your fashion decisions.

Between two and three years ago, while in college, I worked with a few other students on a project describing how virtual fitting rooms would impact clothing sales. Some of my colleagues hated the idea, mostly because it wasn’t technologically feasible at the time. But now the technology is here. Check out the Webcam Social Shopper by Zugara.

Using their webcams, users can “try on” clothes they find on their favorite retailer’s website, and immediately post snapshots of themselves on social networks to get feedback from their friends. In an industry where how you look in the product makes the sale, I think this app could really open some new doors for online marketers.

Would this make that “$200.00” pair of jeans impulse buy decision, easier or harder? Leave me some comments letting me know what you think.

Could you write more about what did you thought – how the fitting rooms would impact apparel eCommerce?
Being a believer that fitting rooms increase the sales, it would be most interesting to see more arguments against it.

    Thanks for asking Heikki :)

I agree fitting rooms are very important when purchasing clothes because fit is such an important factor. But if a website had a “virtual fitting room” where you can see how their products would look on you, it would make brick-and-mortar stores almost obsolete. Many retail websites already have sizing charts and fit guides to help pick the right size, so I think the application Zugara has created is just the next step.

I mean look at a retailer like QVC or any other home shopping network that does tons of repeat business without their customers having to try on the clothes before they buy. I think this is because the customers get to see how the clothing wears on tv first and then QVC has a very detailed fit guide to help people buy the right size.

I know I would buy more online if I could use this Zugara application to see how the clothes would look on me. Because I hate driving to stores!
