Ad Fail – Groupon Father’s Day Deals

It’s a joke. We know. And we also know that Groupon has a notorious wacky sense of humor…but…what?

Groupon is inviting consumers to purchase their Father’s Day deals because you should “celebrate the man who gave birth to you.”

Initially, we thought it might just be a type error. Nope. Wrong.

Next to a picture of a pregnant man gazing adoringly into a mirror is, “He felt you grow and kick inside of him for nine months—thank him with deals on Father’s Day gifts.”

Now, don’t get us wrong, at Welt, we like comedy; but we like it best when it enhances the message, not obscures it. How do you think it affected their deals?

Market Leader or Copycat?

Consider competing businesses in every category: B2B, B2C, product and service industries alike. What competitors are market leaders and who are the copycats? It may surprise you.

Take for instance Google and Bing. Welt has noticed that nearly every time Bing innovates and differentiates itself from Google, we also see Google sweep in, replicate, and steal Bing’s thunder. And so, we’ve finally asked: is Google a market leader…or just a copycat?

There is no denying that Google totally outnumbers its competitor in both size and users. Even in social media: @google has 4,763,949+ followers in Twitter, while @bing only has 239,607+.

But in terms of innovation, who copies more?

Ad Fail – Carbon Tax

For those of you who don’t know, Australia is introducing a new Household Assistance Package, which increases carbon tax payments. The package will go into effect starting July 1, 2012 and is currently being marketed to residents.

Side note: the commercial fails to mention anything about the carbon tax.

Marketing 101: when you are trying to sell a product, a service or an idea, it helps to actually mention it. To advertise is to educate, but don’t make your market guess! Welt gives this campaign an Ad Fail because, well… Just watch it, and you tell us what you think.

Effective Design and Branding

What exactly is a brand without design? We’re not sure either.

A brand needs effective design and strategy in order to be complete. Great design helps a brand function as best it could; so even if there is a purposeful lack of design, this simplicity could make the brand.

A brand needs to be cohesive across all outlets, yet maintain a differentiated image!

On digital and social media outlets, effective design is pertinent because of the increased audience and competition. What makes consumers ”gotta-have” your brand? What differentiates it from others? The marriage of strategy and effective design create your “special sauce”.
