Chick-f-ail

Chick-fil-A has been all the news this past week. Here’s our recap and our take on what’s been going on.

The company has been known to support and heavily donate to anti-gay groups. Recently, however, they took their support a step too far when President and COO, Don Cathy, implied during interviews with the Baptist Press and The Ken Coleman Show that by being in a, supporting, or tolerating homosexual marriage was to “invite God’s judgment.”

Response from the public? Not good.

Ed Helms, the Muppets, Chicago, and the mayor of Boston have threatened to stop doing business with Chick-fil-A. See the letter Mr. Menino sent to Don Cathy here.

It also seems as though this is the actual reason why Chick-fil-A stopped carrying Jim Henson’s Muppet kids meal toys – not because kids got their fingers stuck.

Uproar ensued on Chick-fil-A’s Facebook account after a statement was released claiming that Chick-fil-A “treats every person with honor, dignity and respect – regardless of their belief, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender.” (They also promised to leave the same-sex-marriage debate to politician.)

As consumers lashed out at at the Atlanta based fast food restaurant on their Facebook account, it was discovered that a Chick-fil-A representative created a fake account under the name “Abby Farle” – using a stock photo as a default picture. Again, response from the public? Not good.

  1. Don Cathy can have his beliefs, but positioning his company in the center of a political debate is not the best move.
  2. Do not put out a statement that obviously contradicts everything you did to initiate the release of a statement.
  3. Don’t fabricate why Jim Henson pulled out of a partnership with you.
  4. If you want people to take you seriously, we highly doubt that Abby Farle’s stock photo will do the trick. Hire a crisis plan manager and a new PR company.
  5. You have been banned from two Cities, the Muppets don’t like you, and you’ve angered a lot of your consumers. Maybe it’s time to rethink your PR strategy…

One Response to “Chick-f-ail”

I don’t know how they can come back from this? Fire their management and begin donating to no hate causes I suppose. Just sad because I really like their chicken!
